Northern California

Dan’s Family has a house just south of Mount Shasta in a town called Dunsmuir. It is about 4 ½ hours north of San Francisco and it is incredible. The house is located on a bend in the Sacramento River. The view is amazing. Everyone goes fly fishing, although they weren’t catching as much as they normally do. …Dan and I don’t fish, but we did enjoy the smoked trout! Dan’s step mom, Theresa, caught a 16” fish on our last morning there.

Dan and I spent our time there enjoying the beauty around us. There is a waterfall just a miles walk down the railroad tracks and we had a chance to see just how cold the river water is, even in August! It was great. The only bummer was how much smoke there was from all the wild fires. We couldn’t even see Mount Shasta very well. : (

Dan and Theresa took me to another one of their favorite places, Little Glass Mountain. It is the most bizarre thing. It is a giant mount of obsidian, formed from one of the volcanoes in the area. It was really neat….and very sharp…ouch. We brought back souvenirs but luckily, few scratches. That area of California has a couple of volcanoes. One is Mount Shasta, one is Medicine Lake. The lake is 7.4 miles deep and was formed by a collapse of something called the caldera after a huge explosion. There are also lots of lava beds with caves and other strange sights. We went to one called Ice Cave. It is a huge crater with a cave that the Native Americans once hid from prosecution from the government. There is always ice in the depths of the cave. And boy was it a welcome chill after the 90+ temperature outside.

California is the only place I’ve ever been to that you can drive for half an hour and go from 95 to 65 degrees. I can’t wait to go back!

Dan's Family

San Francisco is one of my favorite places in the world. The weather is always cool and the city is surrounded by hills and the bay. The pictures here are of Dan's family. They are really great. I have been enjoying getting to know them better. We all hang out play cards, eat, and have wonderful political discussions. The second picture is taken from his sister Christine's rooftop deck. They have an incredible view of downtown. It was nice.

Hangin' In Hemphill

No trip to Texas would be complete without visiting my good friends, Travis and Lori, in Hemphill.
They have an adorable little girl named Taylor and she now 2 years old. Days in the Texas woods are spent in the pool, BBQing and driving ATVs through the 120 acres of pasture and woods. Good times!
